While automotive enthusiasts have mixed opinions on the cultural clout of electric vehicles, there’s one aspect of electrification that’s undeniably cool — the resto-mod potential. Despite the historic appeal of driving around in vintage automobiles, they’re often painfully slow with ridiculously long braking distances and a lack of standard features many people living today would deem unacceptable. If you don’t believe me, select a random friend and ask them to parallel park a car without power steering or automatic transmission. Chuck in maintenance costs that are often well above average and it’s little wonder why so many Baby Boomers have been spending their retirement years outfitting the classic-era (or older) cars they grew up with with modern conveniences and components.

But we’ve also started seeing manufacturers (and even some intrepid entrepreneurs) taking the foundational concepts of resto-modding and adding electric propulsion. Some executions even seem to be pushing the boundaries of what we could effectively call automotive restoration, like Hyundai’s Pony Heritage EV.

Based on a first-generation Hyundai Pony hatchback (which the United States never saw), the Heritage utilizes a mystery electric powertrain and some new hardware without mucking up the Giorgetto Giugiaro/Italdesign bodywork. The car itself is supposed to be a tribute to Mr. Giugiaro and the brand’s first official product as much as it is a chance to show off what the current Hyundai design department can do — and it appears to be successful on all fronts.

Sadly, this makes it more of an art car (technically from the “Reflections in Motion” collection) than a conceptual design the manufacturer is mulling over for future production. The car has been completely gutted to make way for modern embellishments, with the interior getting a nearly complete overhaul. Rather than the traditional dashboard, Hyundai lead designer Hak Soo Ha directed staffers to install nixie tubes. While impractical, cathode displays could have made into production vehicles from the 1970s, assuming the manufacturer was unhinged enough to ignore their delicate nature.

Other upgrades include revamped upholstery and trim pieces, LED tail and headlamps, fender-mounted cameras (instead of mirrors), and some new bumpers, door pulls, and wheels.

According to Car & Driver, the Heritage EV has been serving as a focal point at one of Hyundai’s new design facilities in Busan, South Korea, and does double duty as a promotional tool for the Ioniq 5 — which was heavily inspired by the original Pony design that debuted at the 1974 Turin Motor Show. Despite the heavily doctored nature of the photographs, it’s a physical vehicle that can allegedly move under its own power.

Hyundai has made it clear that there’s no plan to put this thing into production, noting that the Ioniq 5 is already filling the space that a modern, regulations-compliant Pony EV would occupy. But we hope it serves to inform future automobiles, as this seems like the natural evolution of the modern-retro aesthetic that’s been catering to baby boomers (and those with an affinity for the classics) for over two decades.

While malaise era remakes don’t sound all that appetizing on paper, there’s a growing number of shoppers who grew up with (and now fetishize) digital displays and Speak & Spell vehicle notifications that are nearing their peak buying power. This old-meets-new, cyber vintage vehicle aesthetic could turn out to be wildly lucrative once more manufacturers realize there’s already a market for it.

Q&A: Hyundai’s New Sales Chief Randy Parker Sees “Potential for a Solid Year”

Hyundai SVP Randy Parker

Hyundai’s new senior vice president, Randy Parker, is expecting big things in 2021.

When the coronavirus pandemic struck the U.S. late last winter the auto industry took a major blow, sales tumbling more than 40% in April. Industry planners and analysts feared the market could plunge to even lower depths than what were seen during the Great Recession. But, unexpectedly, demand began rebounding by mid-year and has continued climbing.

While 2021 is still officially forecast to fall well short of pre-pandemic levels, Randy Parker is seeing strong signs the market could see an even more solid recovery, especially as fleet buyers are coming back, including the daily rental companies devastated by the pandemic’s collapse of business and leisure travel.

Parker has several good reasons to be upbeat. He was this week named Hyundai Motor America’s new senior vice president of sales – just in time to report that the South Korean carmaker set an all-time record for U.S. retail sales. He spoke to us by phone from California.

TheDetroitBureau: U.S. auto sales really came in strong last month, but Hyundai’s record retail demand clearly stands out. What does that say for you folks, and for the market, overall?

Randy Parker: When you look at our product portfolio … it’s the best it’s been in a very long time. Full stop. It’s really resonating with consumers. In addition, our marketing and our advertising has been spot on. We were able to get on the air with (the win for the Hyundai Elantra as) North American Car of the Year very quickly. I think that helped in January.

The new Tucson will be built at Hyundai’s plant in Alabama.

TDB: What about the industry as a whole? Sales last year were supposed to come in at least a million vehicles lower than they did. And the new year is starting off even stronger.

Parker: I think there’s a lot of pent-up demand that’s out there and the momentum we had in December rolled right into January, which is rare. You typically see a little bit of a drop off. Despite all the bad news regarding COVID, I think consumers are ready to come back to market, cautiously. We’re starting to feel like people are ready to get back to some level of normalcy. I hope that trend continues.

TDB: I also sense that. And automobiles, especially buying a new one, can help provide a sense of normalcy, a feeling of getting a reward. And you can get that feeling, even if you’re social distancing.

Parker: Yeah, you know that brings me back to my childhood. I grew up in modest surroundings, but anytime my dad could get a new car parked in the driveway it was a way of saying he’s done something right. And, at this point, purchasing a car is one way to get back to some level of normalcy.

TDB: So, are you seeing signs that suggest that 2021 could see a faster rebound than has been expected, much like what happened in 2020?

2021 Hyundai Elantra

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra captured the North American Car of the Year award.

Parker: One of the things we look at is the fleet companies. (ED: fleet demand collapsed last year, many daily rental firms, in particular, halting vehicle purchases entirely.) The fleet companies are starting to raise their hands again and want production. So, what that tells me is that people want to get into a vehicle as they are traveling a little bit more. They need a rental car and the companies are knocking down our door, sending a very positive signal.

TDB: Cox Automotive recently forecast 2021 sales will rise 9%, to 15.7 million – but that would still be well short of the 17.1 million vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2019. Are you ready to raise Hyundai’s industry forecast for this year?

Parker: I would say, right now, it’s a bit too early to forecast. So, let me just say we are cautiously optimistic about 2021. If things continue the right way, they roll out the vaccine and people get inoculated to the point of herd immunity, it will help the American consumer feel better about life. And that gives us a sense of hope; we’re very, very cautiously optimistic. The good news for Hyundai is that we’ve got some great products for when the market does rebound.

TDB: What about inventory shortages following last spring’s factory closures? There are about a third fewer vehicles in U.S. dealer inventories than normal for this time of year, and I know there’s a very short supply of the hot Hyundai Palisade SUV.

Hyundai took the covers off the new Santa Fe for 2021.

Parker: Our inventory is pretty good, pretty steady. You can always use more of a hot product like Palisade, but there’s a fine line between having one or two too many and one or two too few. I’d like to be on the thin side. Our plant in Alabama is running at full capacity and we’re going to be launching the new Tucson and Santa Cruz there, something we look forward to.

TDB: So, overall, 2021 is looking good, and we could see a faster rebound on both the retail and fleet side?

Parker: Yeah, I’m cautiously optimistic, I’m hopeful that 2021 has the potential to be a very solid year. Barring anything else that comes out of left field, it’s off to a good start and we just have to keep it going.

Hyundai Ends Kona EV Sales in South Korea

Hyundai Kona EV

Hyundai Motor Company will end sales of its best-selling electric vehicle, the Kona EV, after a series of fires and faulty braking systems prompted mass recalls in South Korea.

According to Reuters, Hyundai was reviewing the end of Kona EV sales in South Korea, while an unidentified source said sales would continue in Europe. The Kona EV ranks among Europe’s best-selling EVs. Sales of the model outside its home market account for over three-quarters of the total.

Hyundai declined to confirm the reports but told Reuters it is reviewing various options as it prepares to launch the Ioniq 5 mid-size crossover EV. In October, Hyundai recalled Kona EVs in South Korea due to the risk of short circuits possibly caused by faulty manufacturing of its high-voltage battery cells.

On the Hyundai USA website, the Kona is touted as having an EPA-estimated range of 258 miles with zero emissions out of its 150-KW, 201 HP electric motor, hawked as the highest of any all-electric subcompact SUV. Loaded with intuitive tech like wireless device charging and head-up display, what the Kona EV apparently cannot do is put out the fires, nor warn you in advance if the regenerative brakes are going south.

Here in the U.S., you may be eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500, and if you happen to reside in California, you may get a Clean Vehicle rebate of $2,000 if you own a Kona EV.

The recall, which includes software updates and battery replacements after inspections, involves 25,564 Kona EVs built during September 2017 to March 2020. Hyundai has also recalled 50,864 Kona EV and Nexo fuel-cell vehicles in South Korea due to faulty electronic braking systems. Does this mean that Kona EVs will vanish from the U.S., or will the automaker continue selling them until that proposition goes up in smoke?
