Rare Rides: The 2000 Mercedes-Benz CL 500, a Finale Called Final Edition

Large, luxurious, and very serious, the first generation CL was also an SEC and S during its life. While Mercedes-Benz played the Nineties naming games with its lineup, the W140 soldiered on in two-door format as a last-of for a top-tier Mercedes coupe.

The W140 500 SEC and 600 SEC were introduced in 1992 globally as successor to the C126 (that’s coupe) variant of the legendary W126 S-Class. We’ve covered C126 previously in both standard and cocaine-inspired AMG variants, but never a W126. Look for it in a future Rare Rides Icons.

Both versions of the W140 were penned by Bruno Sacco late in 1987, during the middle of his career at Mercedes. Sacco was lead designer at Benz between 1975 and 1999. With the W140, he brilliantly continued the pillarless hardtop styling of the C126. Two models of SEC were initially available: The 500 used a 5.0-liter V8 that produced 320 horsepower, while the top-drawer 600 SEC had a V12. The most expensive car Mercedes produced at the time, it used a 6.0-liter engine that produced 394 horsepower and rocketed the coupe to 60 in 6.1 seconds. The 600 SEC was incredibly exclusive, and fittingly asked $132,000 in 1992. Adjusted for inflation that figure comes to an eye-watering $262,000. V12 models were identifiable almost solely via their V12 badges on the C-pillar and the 600 on the back.

The range expanded into other models over the years, as a less expensive 4.2-liter V8 was an option in some markets. On the other end of the spectrum, AMG models used larger and more powerful V12 engines of 6.0, 6.9, and even 7.3 liters. That largest engine allowed the CL 73 AMG a top speed of 199 miles per hour and was the engine Pagani chose to power the Zonda of the 2000s. Standard Mercedes-issued coupes were all limited by German tradition to 155 mph. A considerable number of horses were required to motivate the CL, since in any trim it weighed at least 4,500 pounds, and weighed about 4,900 pounds with a 12-cylinder lump upfront. All cars used a four- or five-speed automatic dependent on model year.

In 1994 the SEC moniker that Mercedes used for decades was replaced by an S, as the S 500 Coupe and S 600 Coupe more closely identified with their sedan sibling. It was a temporary measure though, as for the model year 1997 in Europe and 1998 in North America the S was swapped for CL, and the CL-Class was born. Models were then CL 500, CL 600, and so on. The car underneath changed little over the years, as Mercedes used their best build quality, materials, and technology in their halo coupe.

The W140 coupe was offered through 1999 in Europe and 2000 in North America, at which point it was replaced by the W215 CL-Class. The second CL was based upon the new W220 S-Class sedan. The W215 was noteworthy, as it was Bruno Sacco’s final design for Mercedes. Both the W215 and its 2007 successor (C216) were more modern, full of even more technology, much more complicated, and as a consequence has aged more poorly over the years. Both second and third-gen CLs can be found commonly on high-quality internet content like “You Can Get All This $200,000 Mercedes Coupe For $15,000 You Guys Like and Subscribe,” but the W140 SEC and CL have escaped such an undignified fate. Their quality, non-bling appearance, and limited production (26,022 total) have kept them under the radar.

Shortly before the end of its production, Mercedes offered a final run trim on the W140 CL which they creatively called Final Edition. Said special edition seems to be an “all options as standard” version of the CL 500, and in this instance pairs a nice navy metallic paint to a black interior, with sporty AMG-adjacent monoblock wheels. A testament to its build quality, today’s CL has traveled over 164,000 miles and looks brand new. Located in Spain, the future classic asks $15,235.

Weight distribution and chassis are being attentively inspected

The restoration process starts with a very detailed inspection of the car. The most important step will be to understand the original weight distribution so that Lunaz will further know how to adapt the chassis setup, powertrain packaging, and suspension. The process continues with the removal of the internal combustion engine and associated systems.

Next, the chassis is being prepared for re-engineering and electrification. The powertrain has been developed entirely in-house and features the very highest standard European-sourced Tier 1 OEM battery cells and motors. The battery pack ranges from 80 to 120 kWh and offers a range of 255 miles.

Picking the materials for the exterior and the interior is also a very meticulous process. The color palettes are explored and visualized using both 2D sketch work and advanced 3D modelling. Customers can choose between traditional materials and more contemporary ones that will provide an interior free from animal-derived materials.
For example, customers can get carpets which are woven from fishing nets recovered from the sea.

There will be a huge selection of colors and materials, so every customer will have the exact DB6 of their dreams.

The future Tonale will be a compact crossover SUV built on the Small Wide 4X4 platform – the same one used for Jeep Renegade. It will be placed under the Stelvio in the lineup and will take on models like Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

Alfa Romeo actually has big plans for it, as it should be the model that will help them increase the sales numbers from the current 150,000 units a year to 400,000 units.

And, if the production version will be anything like the concept car we really think the Tonale will enjoy great success on the market.

2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Exterior Spyshots
- image 1020384

If you look closely at the spy shots and the concept car you will notice the essence of the concept is still there. Of course, we expect a lot of the design from the Giulia and the Stelvio to be carried over, but we also hope those cool-looking headlamps from the concept car will be kept. It looks like it, but it also looks like they are a little bit wider.

The production version seems to have dropped the coupe-like profile of the concept car, and the rear seems to be very similar to that of the Stelvio.

Interior look

2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Exterior Spyshots
- image 1020393

2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Exterior Spyshots
- image 1020393

Our spy photographers were not able to take any clear pictures of the interior, but the short glimpse we have reveals an updated look when compared to the Stelvio. It seems that the 8.8-inch touchscreen display we’ve seen in the 2021 Stelvio will be replaced with something bigger. Should we hope to see the 10.3-inch one carried from the concept version to production? It is very possible! But what we would really like to see in the production version Tonale is the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and, in general, the clean, elegant look of the concept car.

As for the cargo room, it should be at least enough to match its competitors. For example, the Audi Q3 has a cargo room of 23.7 cubic feet, but it can be expanded to 48 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. The BMW X1 is a little bit more spacious: 27.1 cubic feet with the seats up, or 58.7 cubic feet with the seats folded.

Powertrain

2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Exterior Spyshots
- image 1020396

2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale Exterior Spyshots
- image 1020396

As the Tonale will share its Small Wide 4X4 platform with the Jeep Renegade, we can expect to be offered with the same engines as the Renegade: a range of four-cylinder engines as well as a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

In the plug-in hybrid Renegade, the system combines a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor.

There are two versions available: one with 190 and the other one with 240 horsepower. However, the plug-in hybrid system was the reason why the Tonale was delayed, as Imparato wanted more power for the compact SUV. This could very easily mean that we will see more power coming from the tiny Tonale.

The plug-in hybrid Renegade has an all-electric range of 31 miles, so expect similar numbers in the Tonale too.

Conclusion

The prototypes caught testing in Italy are wearing heavy camouflage, so it is very difficult to guess how the final Tonale will look. However, rumors suggest that by the time winter test season comes we will have a better look at the final product.

No matter what, we expect to see a model with an improved look when compared to the Stelvio, but at the same time with more power when compared to Renegade plug-in hybrid.

Rumors suggest the production version Tonale will debut in the early months of 2022, maybe at the Geneva Motor Show, with sales set to begin in June 2022.

Of the four trims offered on the Hummer EV, two trims come with a tri-motor setup and electric four-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring.

In these models, GMC has offered something known as the WTF or Watts To Freedom mode. It is essentially a launch control with a fancy name. Activate this and you’ll be able to sprint from naught to 60 mph in three seconds flat! On the electric Hummer SUV, it takes 3.5 seconds for the same sprint.

This is mind-blowing because the Hummer EV weighs over 9,000 pounds and isn’t aerodynamically efficient exactly. It goes unsaid that it will take a toll on the range.

What Does GMC Show In This Video?

The 30-second video shows the WTF mode in action. When engaged, there are some nice graphics shown inside. Instead of using the words ‘Activated’ or ‘Engaged’, the truck prompts ‘Armed’. It then guides you to launch successfully, which requires you to floor the pedals and then release the brake to launch. Nothing out of the box here, but the way it’s presented makes the whole process feels special and surreal. The truck even lowers its stance before sprinting to glory.

GMC managed to hype something as common as a Launch Control so well. So, kudos for that! The truck is still some time away. This is the estimated schedule for now:

  • Hummer EV Edition 1 – Fall 2021
  • Hummer EV 3X – Fall 2022
  • Hummer EV 2X – Spring 2023
  • Hummer EV2 – Spring 2024

If you’re wondering how much they cost, this is the trim-wise split-up:

  • Hummer EV2 – $79,995
  • Hummer EV 2X – $89,995
  • Hummer EV 3X – $99,995
  • Hummer EV Edition 1 – $112,595 (Sold Out)

If you think that’s expensive, the VIN001 Hummer EV sold for $2.5 million at an auction for charity a few months!

If you were in the market to buy a Hummer EV, which one would you pick – the truck or the SUV? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below. Lastly, happy Independence Day!

Maserati Ghibli Operanera and Operabianca Special Editions

Maserati and Hiroshi Fujiwara, the Japanese godfather of street culture, come together for a partnership that crosses geographical and disciplinary borders into the unexplored territories of audacity, in a realm beyond which music is embodied in the form of a car and rule-breaking is allowed. Born from this collaboration and presented in an exclusive global première in Tokyo, an artwork in the form of a melodic duet, Operanera and Operabianca, two contrasting evocations of a Special Edition of the Maserati Ghibli.

The partnership is fruit of the capabilities of the Maserati Fuoriserie customisation program, which permits customers to create their own Maserati, tailored to their unique tastes. The car is more than a simple object, it becomes a tailor-made garment, to be proudly worn on the road and along the streets of the world as an extension of oneself, and a symbol of contemporary luxury. Hiroshi Fujiwara is a revered trendsetter, a maverick. Pioneer of the streetwear culture of Tokyo in the 1980s, he was one of the first DJs to import hip hop into the Land of the Rising Sun, and as a producer and musician he has worked with international recording stars. As a visual artist he specialises in expressing aspects of an urban atmosphere. Like Maserati, he has the ability to break down barriers and be audacious. In the spirit of ‘itanji’ which means ‘non-conformist’ two audacious brands have come together uniting Italian design and Japanese perfection to generate an unexpected limited edition car.

Maserati’s style and Hiroshi Fuijwara’s character share a universal recognisability. Today, the encounter between the visual codes of Maserati and the street style of Hiroshi’s brand, Fragment, gives birth to a creative partnership which is a duet in the truest sense of the term: Maserati meets Fragment.

A song on wheels, based on the Ghibli sports saloon in GranLusso trim and created in two exclusive looks. A total of 175 cars for global distribution: Ghibli Operanera and Ghibli Operabianca. They are a bitonal duo, one in a glossy/opaque black and the other in glossy white and opaque black.

The uniformity of colour applies not only to the exteriors but also to the body-colour wheels and door handles. The interiors, on the other hand, are in premium leather and Alcantara, with contrasting silver inserts for the vertical stitching and the Trident on the headrests. The seat belts are dark blue. The front grille is the iconic detail of this partnership: Fujiwara’s metropolitan style is reflected in a specific grille and in the logo, adapted uniquely for this edition. To complete the exteriors, Ghibli Operanera and Ghibli Operabianca are fitted with 20” Urano matte black wheels and a specific badge with the Fragment logo on the C pillar.

Last but not least, the code M157110519FRG appears underneath the three iconic side air ducts. This alphanumeric tag seals the partnership: the first four characters are the Ghibli ID code, the next six numbers record the date of the first meeting (5 November 2019) between Hiroshi and the Centro Stile Maserati, and the final three letters are the acronym of Fragment.

The launch of the car is accompanied by a capsule collection in limited quantities that will be available via the official Maserati channels. Iconic items designed in association with Hiroshi Fujiwara in the same unconventional spirit as the car itself.

Audi A4 E-Tron or A New Porsche Electric Sedan? How About Both?

The Audi A4 E-Tron Could Strengthen Porsche's Lineup Too!

The Audi A4 E-Tron Could Strengthen Porsche's Lineup Too!
- image 947600

There’s a lot of news coming out of both Porsche and Audi these days. Outside of news that Audi is plotting an electric A4 to sell alongside the ICE-powered next-gen A4 – much like Porsche is doing with the Macan – we’ve also learned that Porsche is about ready to unveil the Porsche Boxster EV, a car that will force other sportscar makers to accelerate their plans for electrification. Now, a new report brought to the world by Autocar suggests that Porsche could be plotting a new, smaller sedan to slot below the Porsche Taycan, and you’ll be able to trace its roots right back to Audi.

With this new, sub-Taycan sedan will be tasked with taking out the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4, and it should feature a fastback design much like the Audi A4 E-tron that it will be based on. Of course, the latter part shouldn’t be all that surprising since the new Porsche sedan, should Porsche follow through, will ride on the PPE platform – the same one underpinning the upcoming A4 E-Tron, the Audi A6 E-Tron, Audi Q6 E-Tron, and the Porsche Macan EV. That’s the beauty of the PPE platform as it’s engineered specifically to accommodate vehicles with standard or higher ground clearance.

One engineer told Autocar,

“The modular nature of the PPE platform will allow us to extend our electric car line-up with a range of different models. It is engineered for standard and high ground clearance. A second sedan [saloon] model is one possibility.”

- image 947595

According to the same insiders, Porsche’s third electric model would share the same platform as well as other key components from the Macan EV, like the driveline and battery, among other things. Like the A4 E-Tron, Porsche should offer this new smaller sedan in a single motor, RWD configuration and a dual, AWD configuration. As for power output, you can expect around 300 horsepower on the low side, but the range-topping model will be comparable to the Audi RS4 E-Tron, which we estimate to have at least 469 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. It will share the Macan’s battery, so a range of around 300 miles will be the best that you can hope for, especially given the smaller size. As for the name, well Porsche trademarked the Cajun name way back in 2011, so that’s one possibility, but it’s entirely possible that the brand could go with something entirely different.

A Lexus IS-F With A Twin-Turbo V-8? It Could Be A Thing

What Does The Patent Reveal?

According to the forum, the claim was filed in September 2020. This patent reveals drawings wherein both the turbochargers are placed between the cylinder banks. This design would lead to better throttle response and reduced turbo lag.

A single-turbo option is also a possibility as seen in the images, which means Toyota could offer the mill with single- and twin-turbo options.

Which Cars Could Get It?

- image 662619

While the claim is filed by Toyota, it goes unsaid that the engine will be shared across the automaker’s brands. Lexus is the most likely possibility at this point. With the launch of the 2022 IS 500 F Sport, Lexus marked the introduction of the ‘F Sport Performance Line’ Series. It features a naturally-aspirated V-8 engine that makes 472 horses and 395 pound-feet of torque. While it is good, these specs aren’t enough to sustain in the market for a marquee brand. Perhaps, this V-8 single- or twin-turbo engine could be offered here, too, thus marking a new flagship trim-engine combo.

The new engine could also be seen in the rumored LS F, LC F, and the IS F.

Motoring had reported a couple of months back that the IS F moniker will be resurrected and it will feature a new twin-turbo V-8. This new sits perfectly in line with the patent claim. According to the publication, the engine will be able to handle up to 670 horses and 516 pound-feet of torque. But, considering it will be available in many products, Lexus will offer it in different states of tune. In the IS F, for instance, we could have 535 horses and 445 pound-feet of torque.

Why Does Lexus Need This When It Already Has A Naturally Aspirated V-8?

- image 972461

There is still no definitive answer if turbocharged engines are better than naturally aspirated engines or not. A purist would pick the free-flowing, high-revving naturally aspirated engine as his or her pick, whereas folks who want outright straight-line performance and shove-in-the-seat feeling would prefer turbo-powered mills. The lack of a turbocharged engine would haunt Lexus and avoid it from being a genuine threat to the Germans.

With the resurrection of the IS F model and a twin-turbocharged V-8, Lexus will be able to take on the likes of the Mercedes-AMG C63 and the BMW M3 Competition, and perhaps, be better than both of them. Currently, the AMG C63 is the only one powered by a twin-turbo V-8, but makes less than 500 horses. The M3 Competition makes over 500 horses, but features a twin-turbo six-pot mill. The IS F, if revived, could offer the best of both worlds – a twin-turbo V-8 and over 500 horses. Doesn’t it already raise the stakes for Lexus?

- image 972426

With the resurrection of the IS F model and a twin-turbocharged V-8, Lexus will be able to take on the likes of the Mercedes-AMG C63 and the BMW M3 Competition

For your reference, the AMG C63 is powered by a 4.0-liter, V-8 bi-turbo engine that churns out 469 ponies and 479 pound-feet of twist. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox that helps that car sprint to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.9 seconds. The BMW M3 Competition features a six-cylinder engine, but with a twin-turbo setup. It dishes out 503 horses and 479 pound-feet of torque. Here, the engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It takes 3.8 seconds to 60 mph from rest.

If you’re wondering about the price, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG C63 starts at $68,600 whereas the BMW M3 Competition starts at $72,800. You can expect the IS-F with this engine to be priced in this ballpark, too.

Any Toyota Product In The Reckoning For This Engine?

2022 Toyota Tundra - Everything You Need to Know

2022 Toyota Tundra - Everything You Need to Know
- image 979405

Contrary to the hushed talks about the Tundra ditching its 5.7-liter V-8 in favor of a downsized V-6, the automaker could come up with a performance version of the truck with this new engine powering it. This will add the Tundra to the performance truck mix which currently has the Ram 1500 TRX and the Ford F-150 Raptor R joining it soon.

Other than this, we could perhaps see it in some GR-branded products in the future. The automaker is also pumping in big money in its R&D. For instance, around $2.8 billion is being spent on developing its Shimoyama R&D center. It features a test track for now, but some more are being developed, which includes a high-speed circuit as well. It is expected to be completed by 2023. If you connect all these dots, we could be in for a new generation of high-powered turbocharged V-8s from Toyota in the next couple of years.

Which Toyota or Lexus product would you like to see powered by a turbocharged V-8 engine? Let us know in the comments section below.

Porsche Just Gave the Cayenne GTS and GTS Coupe Turbo V-8 Power

The Porsche Cayenne GTS doesn’t look very different from the regular model

leftright

Both GTS models are fitted with a Sport Design package and GTS-specific features.

However, these don’t make it look significantly different compared to the regular Cayenne. Notable elements include LED headlamps and taillights with dark-tinted covers and black trim for the front air intakes, side windows, the badges on the rear fascia, and the tailpipes. The GTS is also fitted with 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels finished in satin-gloss black.

The Porsche Cayenne GTS comes with a sporty, exclusive interior

While the exterior doesn’t stand out unless you look really close, the interior comes with plenty of cool and exclusive features. These models are fitted with eight-way sports seats as standard that are exclusive to the GTS trim. Likewise, the cabin features “GTS” logos on the front doors, door sills, the rev counter, and the headrests. The GTS also comes with extra Alcantara, now covering the roof lining, the seat center panels, the center console armrests, and the doors. There’s also dark-brushed aluminum trim on the dashboard and the upper doors. You can spice things up a bit more with the optional GTS Interior Package, which adds decorative stitching in Carmine Red or Crayon.

The Porsche Cayenne GTS returns to the V-8 engine

The second-generation GTS started life with a naturally aspirated V-8 engine, but Porsche replaced with a twin-turbo V-6 during the 2015-model-year facelift.

Now, Porsche is ditching the V-6 in favor of a turbocharged, 4.0-liter V-8.

Rated at 460 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of torque, this V-8 is essentially a detuned version of the 4.0-liter in the Turbo model, but it’s a bit more powerful than the outgoing GTS. Specifically, it delivers an extra 20 horsepower and an additional 14 pound-feet of twist.

Compared to the Cayenne S, powered by a twin-turbo, 3.0-liter V-6, the GTS comes with an extra 26 horsepower and 51 pound-feet of torque. Compared to the Cayenne Turbo, the GTS falls behind by a notable 90 horsepower and 111 pound-feet of twist.

As far as performance goes, Porsche says that the new GTS hits 60 mph from a standing start in 4.5 seconds. Opt for the Sport Chrono Package, and that benchmark drops to only 4.2 seconds. That’s 0.6 seconds quicker than the outgoing model. Top speed for the GTS is rated at 168 mph, five mph more than the old version.
